Original character ideas you can draw today

Press New prompt and you get a whole original character: a name, a species, a job, how they look, three colors to paint them in, a couple of personality traits and the one flaw that makes them interesting. Every line is something you can put on paper, so the generator skips the long biographies and gives you what a character sheet needs. Only need a name? Each profile starts with one, and you can click it to roll new names until one fits.

Want something quicker? The random character generator gives you a single word like "spellblade" or "doctor" to sketch in a few minutes.

How to use the OC generator

  1. Choose a genre (Fantasy, Modern, Sci-fi or Spooky) or leave it on "All genres".
  2. Choose a species. "Human only" keeps it to people, and "Any species" lets in elves, animal-folk and the occasional leviathan.
  3. Choose "Quick" for a warm-up sketch or "Detailed" for a full character sheet.
  4. Click any line to swap just that part. Keep the name you love and reroll the hair.

How to turn an OC profile into a character design

  • Start with the silhouette. The build and the standout feature decide the outline. Draw three tiny thumbnails as solid black shapes and keep the one you'd recognize from across a room.
  • Paint with the three colors. Use the first color for most of the design, the second for the big accents and the third for small details like buttons, eyes or a scarf.
  • Let the personality choose the pose. A stubborn character plants their feet, and a nosy one leans in. Save the flaw for a second sketch: draw the moment it gets them into trouble.
  • Draw the backstory hook as a scene. "Left home the night the village bell rang by itself" already gives you the time of day, the place and the mood.
  • Make a reference sheet once you're attached. Draw the front, side and back, plus a few expressions. Future you will thank you the next time you forget which side the scar was on.

Questions about the OC generator

What is an OC?

OC stands for original character, one you invent yourself instead of borrowing from a show, game or book. Many artists keep a small cast of OCs and draw them for years.

Does the OC generator use AI?

No. Every profile is put together from word lists we wrote by hand, so you get ideas to draw and not a finished picture.

What's the difference between a quick and a detailed profile?

A quick profile has six lines, enough for a sketch: name, species and role, looks, one standout feature, colors and personality. A detailed profile adds age, outfit, an accessory, likes, fears, a quirk and a backstory hook.

Can I get only human characters?

Yes. Pick "Human only" in the species menu. "Any species" also includes elves, animal-folk and creatures.

Can I use it as an OC name generator?

Yes. Click the name line to get a new name and keep everything else. The names change with the genre, so a sci-fi pilot won't end up called Bartholomew (unless you want that).

How do I make my OC look unique?

Push one thing further than feels normal: a bigger hat, a stranger color, a scar in an odd place. Then keep the rest simple so that one thing stands out.
